If You're Not Thinking About A Smoky Mountain Summer Right Now, It's Time To Start.

This winter was rough, right? We've seen more serious snow here in Western North Carolina this year than in all our sixteen years of glamping! But, the cold is finally starting to ebb away, the sun is out and shining most days now, and it's time to start thinking about a summer escape to the Great Smoky Mountains. Western North Carolina has always been the mountain destination for all things outdoors, and it's even better now that the pain of Hurricane Helene has passed and things are back to pristine normal.

We often hear the question..."how long is long enough to really visit Western North Carolina?" And that's a good one. Longer is always better, but Bryson City and her surrounding communities are definitely worth even a overnight stop for passers-through. But to answer that question more thoughtfully, we'd say four nights is just about perfection for a stay in the heart of the Smoky Mountains.

Here's how to plan the perfect mountain vacation this summer:

1. Book Your Lodging At Sky Ridge

A Sunset Hike To Wesser Bald Fire Tower

This is a no-brainer! Sky Ridge is the perfect jumping off point for your WNC vacation. With yurts (or cabins) for every type of traveler - be it solo, couples or families - we've got something for everyone. We've been serving happy glampers for over sixteen years, and we win national and local best-of awards year after year. Our yurts have central heat and air to keep you comfy, beds so comfortable the mattress company has renamed the bed after us, views that will take your breath away, service that can't be beat and so much more. We're located just minutes from the Nantahala Outdoor Center and the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad so you'll be close to most everything you might want to get into, and there's plenty to do at your yurt if you decide you don't want to venture out.

Want to make it even better?  Reserve a stay for anytime in 2026 and save 25% when you use code "SPRINGBREAKAWAY" at checkout. This coupon only works through March 15th, and it's a great way to plan ahead and save.

2. Get Aquainted With Bryson City

Underground at Tuckaleechee Caverns

Bryson City is growing in popularity amongst people who want to experience all the Smokies have to offer but don't want the crowds of Asheville and Gatlinburg. We're right in the heart of the Smokies, but we offer a smaller and more intimate picture of what mountain life is all about. Our town is walkable by most everyone, with shops and dining, sights and streams all right in the downtown area. Grab a sandwich at local favorite High-Test Deli or check out the Mountain Aquarium for a glimpse into the wildlife in our streams and rivers. Take in artisan crafts and home-grown vegetables at Darnell Farms and maybe catch a live show while you're there. Grab a craft beer as you watch the Great Smoky Mountain Steam Train pull away from the downtown center. There's so much to do in Bryson, you can really spend an entire day just exploring the town.

Want to make it even better?  Visit the Bryson City Visitors Center in downtown. It's the big white domed building just at the beginning of the main drag, and you can check them out ahead of time here. It's also the easiest place to park in town, and if you've got an EV, you can charge it here while you explore.

3. Pick Your Big Adventure

A Swim At Midnight Hole

There is so much to do in and around Bryson City, you may have a hard time choosing what adventure(s) you'll get into! Some of the most popular options in the area are whitewater rafting on the Nantahala River, hopping aboard the steam train on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad, tubing down Deep Creek in the National Park, zip-lining, hiking, swimming, kayaking and so much more. In fact, there are so many choices we've compiled some of the best adventures so you can book your stay AND your adventure all in one place! Sky Ridge has partnered with GuideTime to make it easier for our guests to book the big adventure of their dreams in the Smokies.

Want to make it even better?  Check out all the great adventures you can book directly through GuideTime here. With sixteen adventures to choose from, you're sure to find the perfect adventure for your bunch.

4. Choose Your Side-Quest

Andrews Valley Rail Tours

Once the "big" thing is done, leave time to find some of the smaller things to do in town. We're well-known for big water adventure and hiking, but we also have other activities that can sometimes surprise first-time visitors to the area. Gem mines are always a big hit with the kiddos, and there are plenty of them around the area. A visit to the Ocunaluftee Indian Village offers families a chance to learn about the rich history of the native Cherokee people. And if you can catch a traditional powwow at Grumpy Bears, that's even better. Down at the NOC, you can usually catch professional kayakers honing their skill right that take-out point (where you can also catch a bonfire or a pick-up game of corn hole right on the water). Whatever your extra time affords you to do, you'll find it.

Want to make it even better?  Take a ride out onto Needmore Road just outside of town and take a walk across a pretty impressive swinging bridge. Definitely insta-worthy!

5. Stay Hydrated

Sweet Visit To The Chocolate Shoppe

Bryson City is becoming very popular for its local breweries. Mountain Layers offers a rooftop experience and often hosts local musicians, while Native Brews boasts being the newest game in town. If you want a true outdoor hangout right inside the city limits, be sure to hit The Nantahala Brewing Company just behind the train station. There's usually live music with plenty of space to lounge and dance, and both kids and dogs are welcome. Or, stop in to Bryson City Outdoors to experience the original area brewery.

Want to make it even better?  Plan to grab dinner at The Rice Wagon food truck out behind Mountain Layers. Get the Nacho Daddy, and thank us later!

6. Gear Down Before Heading Home

NOC Adventure Park

Make sure you plan to slow down after the days' adventures while you're here. It's hard not to want to squeeze it all in, but taking a minute to relax in the Smokies will really help to enhance the magic of the area. Build a campfire at the yurts and share a s'more with someone you love. Watch the sky turn from clear blue to pink and purple each evening and witness a natural painting to rival any master artist. Sleep in. Listen to the crickets and the howl of distant coyotes. Sometimes the beauty of a place is not in all the activities you can do, but in how much it can help you disconnect from the stresses of everyday life and reconnect to the natural surroundings that live in all of us.

Want to make it even better?  End your day by booking a Scandinavian Mineral Soak at Long View Resort. You can relax in a wood-fired mineral soaker for two under the stars and feel your cares easing away. You can book that here.

Whatever you find yourself doing, let us be the first to welcome you for the first time, or welcome you back if you've been here before. Have a great stay!
